COMPARISON OF ADJECTIVES

Definition: Adjective এর সাধারন কোন রুপান্তর বা পরিবর্তনকে Comparison of Adjective বলে | আর যদি Adjective এর মধ্যে একটি অপরটির যদি তুলনামুলক রুপান্তর বা পরিবর্তন হয় তবে তাকে Degree of Comparison বলে |

Degree of Comparison তিন প্রকার। যথাঃ

  • Positive Degree: এখানে ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর সাধারণ গুণ প্রকাশ পায়।
  • Comparative Degree: র মাধ্যমে দুই বা ততোধিক ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করা হয়। Adjective এর শেষে er অথবা পূর্বে more যুক্ত থাকে। 
  • Superlative Degree: এর মাধ্যমে অনেকের মধ্যে তুলনা করা হয়। Adjective এর শেষে est অথবা পূর্বে most যুক্ত থাকে। 


Rules of Changing the Degree of Comparison


   RULE-01:

Positive

Than any other/than all other

The + adjective

No other + extension + verb + so/as + adjective (Positive form) + as + Subject

Subject + verb + adjective (Comparative form) + than any/all other + extension

Subject + verb + the + adjective (Superlative form) + extension

    Examples:

                       1. Positive: No other boy in the class is as smart as he.

                           Comparative: He is smarter than any other boy in the class.

                           Superlative: He is the smartest boy in the class.

                       2. Positive: No other restaurant in our country is as good as Sheraton.

                            Comparative: Sheraton is better than all other restaurant in our country.

                            Superlative: Sheraton is the best restaurant in our country.

Subject + verb + adjective (Comparative form) + than most other + extension

Subject + verb + one of the + adjective (Superlative form) + extension

   

Examples:

                      1. Positive: Very few animals are so useful as the cow.

                           Comparative: The cow is more useful than most other animals.

                            Superlative: The cow is one of the most useful animals.

Subject + verb + as +  adjective + as + noun/extension

Subject + verb + no less/not less/ +  adjective + than + noun/extension

No formations

     Examples:

                        1. Positive: Jack is as wise as Sam.

                             Comparative: Jack is not less wise than Sam.

                         2. Positive: He is as strong as you.

                              Comparative: He is no less strong than you.

 

বিশেষ দ্রষ্টব্য -০১ঃ যদি শুধু not as…………..as থাকে, তবে less………than হবে।

       Examples:

                         1. Positive: Jack is not as wise as Sam.

                               Comparative: Jack is less wise than Sam.

                          2. Positive: Nipa is as clever as Deepa.

                               Comparative: Nipa is no less clever as Deepa.

 

বিশেষ দ্রষ্টব্য -০২ঃ মাঝেমাঝে Comparative এ শুধু than থাকে, সেক্ষেত্রে Positive করার জন্য নিচের নিয়মটি অনুসরণ করতে হবে। এক্ষেত্রে Superlative সাধারণত হয় না।

        Structure: than এর পরের অংশ + verb + not (যদি Comparative বাক্য affirmative হয়) + so/as + adjective (positive form) + as + Subject

        Examples:

                            1. Comparative: Tomatoes are cheaper than Oranges.

                                 Positive: Oranges are not so cheap as Tomatoes.

                             2. Positive: A bird doesn’t fly so fast as a plane.

                                  Comparative: A plane flies faster than a bird.
