Basic Ideas About SENTENCE
Definition: According to Jisan Rehman Ratul: "If two or more than words are combined together & make any complete & meaningful sense, then its called SENTENCE."
Pre-requisites of Sentences: According to its above definition, Sentence is required to have some requisites to be sentence as follows-
1. Completeness of sense
2. Meaning of sense
3. Order of sense
Components of Sentence: Sentences are made by some of the common following structures are as follows-
=> I play. ( Subject + verb)
=> Karim plays football. (Subject + verb + object)
=> He has done a good job. ( Subject + verb + adjective + object + extension)
Subject: Subject in a sentence is whom a work is accomplished by. Such as,
=> Karim plays football.
Predicate: Predicate in a sentence is what the subject does. Such as,
=> Karim plays football.
Compliment: Compliment in a sentence is a kind of identity of a subject. Such as,
=> Karim is a doctor.
=> He is good.
Types of Sentence: According to its meaning, there are five kinds of sentences. These are-
1. Assertive Sentence: Assertive sentence which makes some kinds of statements or assertions. Such as,
=> Karim went to the market. ( Subject + verb + object + extension)
N.B: Assertive can be affirmative or negative.
2. Interrogative Sentence: Which makes some kinds of questions to ask someone. Such as,
=> Where do you live? (W/H + auxiliary verb + subject + principal verb + object + extension)
=> Am I a teacher? ( To be/ have verb + subject + object + extension)
=> Can he play football? ( Modal verb + subject + principal verb + object + extension)
3.Imperative Sentence: Which makes some kinds of orders, advice, requests, forbids etc to someone. Such as,
=> Request: Give me a glass of water, please.
=> Order: Go home, right now.
=> Forbid: Don't tell lie.
=> Advice: Always speak the truth.For all- ( Verb + object + extension )
4. Optative Sentence: That kinds of sentences which make some kinds of prayers or intentions. Such as,
=> May you live long. {May + subject + verb(without s/es/ing/ed/d) + object + extention}
5. Exclamatory Sentence: This sentence which expresses strong feelings as like emotions, happiness, surprises etc. of the speaker. Such as,
=> How beautiful a flower it is! (How + adjective + a/an + noun/pronoun + noun/pronoun + be verb + !)
=> What an interesting game it is!
=> Were I a rich man!
=> Had I a strong physique!
Types of Sentence: According to its structure, there are three kinds of sentences. These are,
1. Simple Sentence: The sentence which describes simply. In this sentence, there is one finite verb. Such as,
=> Karim is a student.
=> Having gone to the market, I bought a shirt.
2. Complex Sentence: The sentence which describes with having at least one principal clause. Such as,
=> I know what you think.
=> He is the man who came yesterday.
3. Compound Sentence: If combining more than one principal clause together by some coordinating conjunctions (and/but/or) is called compound sentence. Such as,
=> He saw me and he called to me.
=> When he had completed his work, he started for home with his necessaries but he had an accident on his way of home and he never came home back alive.
